FAQs

In order to qualify for the DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center, your school must have an available room that meets some general requirements.  We realize that all schools and their spaces are different and that may cause some confusion.   Therefore, we came up with this list of Frequently Asked Questions to help guide you.

  1. Can the designated room for the fitness center be less than 900 square feet?  Rarely.  Sometimes, we’ll consider it if your room is only slightly under the 900 ft2 point and you have smaller class sizes.  However, the equipment package may be limited for a smaller room.
  2. Can the room be an old gym?  Rarely.  The room needs to be secured so students can’t use the equipment without trained staff supervision. The room cannot be a multipurpose room.  The space must be fully dedicated to the fitness center.  Balls and other objects can cause injury to the equipment or, more importantly, to students using the equipment.
  3. Can the room be an atrium above a gym?  Yes, but the room must be structurally sound to support the weight of people and equipment.  Guard rails and safety netting would need to be set up.  There also needs to be a reasonable installation route for our equipment team.
  4. Can the room be a stage? What if we installed a railing?  Unlikely.  Stage spaces are typically too small.  Some equipment  needs to be anchored to the floor.  The weight of the equipment may risk the structural integrity of the stage.
  5. Can the room be in an auxiliary building?  Yes, as long as the building is on your school campus.  The space needs to be secured and have adequate A/C, heat, ventilation and lighting.
  6. Can the room be a portable classroom?  Yes.  The floor must be able to support the weight of people & equipment and the room must have adequate A/C, heat and ventilation.
  7. Can the room be two adjoining rooms?  Yes.  This situation usually includes the removal of a soft wall divider.  A supervisor must be able to see into both rooms without visual obstructions.
  8. Can the room be in a basement or on a second floor?  Usually, as long as there is a stairwell or elevator with a minimum width of 42 inches.
  9. Can we install the appropriate walls or boundaries to make an area meet your criteria?  Possibly.  Minor room renovations are okay but renovations requiring inspections and building permits would not work as they could delay the timeline needed for an on-time installation.
  10. Does there have to be windows in the room?  If not, what type of ventilation is required?  Windows are not required but adequate A/C, heat and ventilation is required.  The room must meet your local safety, fire and building code requirements. Basically, the room needs to be safe and healthy for students to work out in.
  11. Are we required to have or purchase athletic flooring?  No, but athletic flooring helps reduce noise and prevent equipment from sliding.  We offer our schools a discount on flooring.
  12. Does the equipment need to be nailed down to the floor? Some equipment, like the Indoor Jungle Gym, must be bolted to the floor. Local building codes, safety codes or earthquake codes may require a school to fasten all equipment to the floor.
  13. Can we name our fitness center?  Can we create our own mural or logo for the wall in addition to the logos the NFGFC provides?  The fitness center is officially named a “DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center” and there will be signage mounted on the walls.  Yet, in addition to this official signage, we encourage schools to add their own mascot or mottos to the walls.
  14. Can we choose our own equipment?  We use a specific mix of preselected equipment for a youth fitness “timed circuit”  program.  The equipment mix changes based on room size, average class size and average student age.  A representative from our partner Fit Supply will meet with your team to put together a specific mix that meets your school’s needs.
  15. Can staff and community members use the equipment?  Yes!  We strongly encourage this.
  16. Does someone come out to the school to do a training with staff and students?  Yes, a Fit Supply representative will come to train your physical education teachers and any other staff members that will be supervising the fitness center.  A group of students (“student representatives”) will also need to be selected to attend this training session.
  17. Does a training manual come with the fitness center?  Yes, a binder will be sent to each school that covers a variety of topics including Safety & User Guidelines, Equipment Information, General Maintenance, Fitness Center Floor Plan and Recording Sheet Options.  Exercise placards are also mounted on each functional trainer machine.
  18. How long does the fitness center installation take?  The school needs to reserve a full day for the equipment installation. An experienced technician team will be sent to the school and the installation should be completed within 12 hours.
  19. Does the school need to provide anything for the installation?  Yes, the school will need to provide some things to help our installation team.  These items may include:  a forklift, a pallet jack, dollies, pushcarts, and trash cans.
